About Enabling Auditing

We conduct enabling auditing to boost the capacity of the people and the organisation to effectively understand and deal with work under varying conditions, with the goal of building greater resilience. The approach seeks to discover what is helping and hindering performance where health, safety and environment are understood as an emergent property of a complex adaptive system not solely as a system input.

The enabling auditing approach is based on the 3 Enabling Safety Principles:

  1. People are a solution to harness not a problem to control.

  2. Safety is about boosting capacity not only the absence of unwanted events.

  3. Safety is an ethical responsibility rather than a bureaucratic accountability managed upwards.

The enabling auditing approach is based on an appreciative learning approach focused on:

  • understanding how successful outcomes are created at work,

  • understanding when work is difficult and what happens, 

  • and importantly finding insights into how work can be improved

Enabling Auditing focuses on normal work, the way it happens and how people manage to create successful outcomes each day. It is a deliberate, focused and methodical approach that:

  1. Examines normal work with the view that what causes success and failure is present all the time.

  2. Examines work as it is being actually conducted rather than just comparing observed work against a “normative standard”. There is no such thing as “desktop Appreciative Investigation”.

  3. Describes work from the point of view of those performing the work and seeks to tell their story, seeing them as the experts in their work.

  4. Uses observed variations to provide valuable insights rather being viewed only as a threat to safety. 

  5. Facilitates workers to improve their own work environment and practices. The way to “empower” workers and create ownership for safety is to appropriately transfer decision making back to those undertaking the work.

Enabling Auditing shifts from hunting for deviations to understanding performance and views performance, both good and bad, as systematically connected to the tools, resources and strategies people rely on, and the conditions and constraints people work in. 

It moves to understand capacity and resilience and based on the premise if things go right then they cannot go wrong. The process seeks to measure positives and challenges and build genuine engagement, where “auditees” become a partner in both learning and problem solving, rather than being the single source and recipient of the problem.

Art of Work can transfer Resilimap® enabling audit skills into your organisation through the following program options.

Resilimap® Enabling Auditor course: Level 1- Introductory

This course is Resilimap® enabling audit 2-day auditor training program. The program familiarises participants with the Resilimap® enabling audit method,  that leading organisations are turning to. This two-day course is designed for an organisation’s auditors participants to learn the philosophy and methodology so that it can be applied within the organisation. This course uses experiential learning techniques and provides the facilitators with the skills to set them up for success including:

  • Group facilitation techniques and strategies 

  • A detailed understanding of the process 

  • Simulated Resilimap® enabling audit exercises 

Resilimap® Enabling Auditor course: Level 2 - Intermediate - Certified

This program has two phases. The participants complete the 2-day Resilimap® enabling audit training course. The organisation then arranges for their nominated facilitators to undertake a lResilimap® enabling audit event, supported by an Art of Work Coach. The coach will guide and assist the learning team event. The report will be completed by the nominated auditor, which will be reviewed by the coach. Nominated auditors that meet the Art of Work standard will then be certified.

Resilimap® Enabling Auditor course: Level 3 - Advanced - Certified

This program has three phases. The organisation engaged Art of Work to undertake a Resilimap® enabling audit for each of the nominated facilitators within their organisation. The nominated auditors will be a participant in the complete process. The participants will then complete the 2-day Resilimap® enabling auditor course. The organisation then arranges for their nominated auditor to undertake a Resilimap® enabling audit, supported by an Art of Work Coach. The coach will guide and assist the Resilimap® enabling audit. The report will be completed by the nominated auditor, which will be reviewed by the coach. Nominated auditors that meet the Art of Work standard will then be certified.

Resilimap® Governance Strategic Review

Engage Art of Work to review and understand your organisation’s current governance and compliance program; and detail a renewed strategy for learning and improvement both from what goes well and what has failed. Maximise the knowledge absorbed from how your people function and implement only the most efficient strategies and processes. Resilimap® Enabling Audit workshops
