About Resilamp® Learning Teams

Investigations undertaken by many organisations have become burdened with pre-conception and hindsight bias that constrains useful and insightful learning. In most people's experience, the underlying purpose of an investigation is to find error, and identify who is responsible for that error, which is often followed by corrective action that is retributive. Current investigations are insufficiently curious about work.

A Resilimap®  Learning Team is a structured appreciative enquiry method, designed to engage curiosity to facilitate team-based enquiry using the Resilimap® analysis method.

Resilimap® can be applied to different work scenarios, with different outcomes in mind. In each scenario Resilimap® seeks to uncover organisation conditions and constraints, demand and performance expectations, and the individual/team capability and control. The output assesses capacity, variability and performance capability and the inherent vulnerabilities.

The Resilimap® analysis method is undertaken by a trained  learning team. The method is based on engaging with “normal work”, in order to understand what is helping and hindering successful and safe work. The enquiry centres on the view of those doing the work, to understand the work experience conditions from their perspective, and thereby seeking to understand the inputs, decision points within the conditions and constraints that are or were present.

  • Resilimap® Learning Teams examine normal work - The causes of unwanted events may be present all of the time

  • Resilimap® Learning Teams examine work as it is actually conducted - There is no such thing as a “desktop” learning team

  • Resilimap® Learning Teams describe work from the point of view of those performing the work - Workers are the experts in their own experience of work

  • Resilimap® Learning Teams use variation to provide insight - It is often more helpful to understand variability than to enforce compliance.

The method is designed to meet governance and regulatory requirements, whilst enabling the optimum learning insight.

Unwanted Event

Unwanted events are an important outcome to learn from, however, those involved in these events are often unwilling to share anything other than what can be discovered, due to potential repercussions. A Resilimap®  Learning Team endeavours to build trust and to encourage open contribution, but the limits of these situations to learn must be recognised. Even with these constraints, the Resilimap® Learning Team is a superior technique to uncover the transactional, behavioural and organisational conditions in an unwanted event. If you seeking to transition from blame to learning, improvement and resilience, the Resilimap®  Learning Team is the process to use.

When Work is Difficult

In the experience of Art of Work, this is the most productive condition to conduct a learning team. As there is no unwanted event, the enquiry is not burdened with self-preservation behaviours. In this condition, people are frustrated and want to share what helps and hinders them. They also freely share their strategies to get the work completed, both from the system and outside of the system. Work is difficult learnings teams always uncover surprises, both positive and problematic.

When Work is Successful

A Resilimap®  Learning Team in this condition is often viewed as reward and recognition for good performance. Participants freely share their methods and their ideas to improve further. Successful work is a great source for learning transferable methods and adaptations.

Reporting and Codification
