Embracing tomorrow

Embracing tomorrow

safety differently

Safety Differently is about relying on people’s expertise, insights and the dignity of work as actually done to improve safety and efficiency. It is about reducing the bureaucratization and compliance of work. Safety science shows us that people create safety every day: they recognize, absorb and adapt to conditions outside of what a bureaucracy or system of compliance can know and predict. Their work-as-done is precisely the source of insight and innovative solutions that we need to tap into to understand how success is created, and it may well show us where the next accident might actually come from.

Sidney Dekker - Chief Scientist, Art of Work

Safety Differently: The Movie tells the stories of three organizations that had the courage to devolve, declutter, and decentralize their safety bureaucracy. Safety differently is a story of hope; of rediscovering ways to trust and empower people, and of reinvigorating the humanity and dignity of actual work. unlocking potential

people are the solution

The biggest threat to safety, productivity and efficiency is not the non-compliant worker. Instead the danger lies in the belief in uniformity, authority and external expertise. The challenge ahead is not one of winning hearts and minds, but one of enabling organisations to unleash their own potential to assess, adapt, improve, create and innovate.

disruptive safety

People don't come to work to be safe. They come to work to work. Safety can only thrive when it is an active partner with the objectives and success of the organisation as a whole. Unless we embrace organisational goals in the holistic sense, then safety may contribute to the failure of the organisation, rather than its ability to thrive and regenerate.
